They... hold cymbals up... sort of.
As terrible as these stands are, they do hold cymbals up. They're so light they actually came with counterweights to put on the other end of the booms, and they're not all that effective.
I was successfully able to get a 20" ride cymbal to sit on one of these without falling over, but here are a couple of pointers:
- Don't extend the boom fully (obviously).
- Loosen the telescoping part enough to spin it around and set the boom parallel to one of the legs, so all the weight is pushing on that foot. It'll be harder for it to fall over that way.
- If you're strong, hand-tightening may be enough, but after a number of days my ride sort of fell because the tilt wasn't tight enough. Used a wrench for some extra leverage and it holds up just fine.
A word to the wise: they don't come with cymbal felts, just rubber seats. You'll probably want to replace them with felts, but it's of course up to the individual.

Good for practice, beginner, or hobbiest
I wanted a couple of stands for my electronic drums, so thought I'd try these. They are light weight, so don't try using these (with the boom extended) for large cymbals of about 16" or larger. You should be ok if you keep the stand straight and not fully extended if using heavier cymbals. Even with my small electronic cymbal pads it was a bit shaky with the boom extended. If you set them up and leave them, you will be ok, but if you are a touring drummer, you may want to think about something more heavy duty and can stand up to the rigors of setting up and tearing down.

They are okay to start off with but dont expect to gig much before they start breaking. I would recommend them if your a beginner but not for touring.
