I have a room filling Pearl kit for my home studio but for quiet practice and playing intimate venues this purpose built little kit is tops.
The included mesh heads and rubber cymbal pads mean you can practice in the middle of the night and the only thing that might wake up will be the cat. One note though, the mesh heads are not known for durability over the long haul.
Put regular heads and decent cymbals with these and you'll have a pretty nice sounding pancake kit suitable for small clubs and tight spaces. Things fit so well inside one another that these can easily be hauled in a small car and setup is a snap. As with any drums the sound you get is equal to the quality of the batter heads and the skill with which you tune them. The kit can be tuned to give a surprisingly heavy sound if that's what you need or muted so onlookers can be almost on top of you without being subjected to too much volume. Great little drums!
I live in an apartment so the noise level of playing drums is a major issue. After an exhausting trek to find the right kit I decided on the Rythym Traveler. I have to say I did not like the whole shrunkeness idea (because most drum kits look like mack trucks) but this kit was easily the best option. The mesh heads and plastic cymbals allow you to practice extremely quietly and there is also the option to change the heads and cymbals to get the real sound of the kit.
Great Value for the Price
Looking for a smaller scale quality drum set for my son, I came across the Pearl Rhythm Traveler set. The set offers live and practice heads for the drums and cymbals. You have to choose which ones you are installing.
The instructions could be better as they were quite small and had limited information for a newbie that has never put a drum set together.
The set came in 2 boxes. Pearl does a great job of packing the set as everything arrived safe and secure.
The stands and pedals are excellent quality.
The only grip are the Pearl cymbals CX200, which are not that great as I found out from several reviews on the internet. Instead of using them I sold them and purchased a Paiste set that came with a crash, ride and hi-hats that was more than 50% of the cost of the drum set but worth it.
Overall this small footprint drum set sounds good and is well made.
